Professions…Ugh

October 4, 2010

I know this is going to surprise y’all…but although I’m good at leveling quickly (thanks Nick!) I’m terrible at leveling my professions. Why?

BECAUSE IT’S EFFING BORING.
Since I’m herbalism/alchemy, all I do is pick stupid flowers and then click a button that somehow turns them into a potion or elixir or something. And I know that at some point the herbalism/alchemy combo gets cool…but right now, I hate it.

And therefore, my profession level is laughable. I’m not even to 150 in either of them! So, in an effort to slow down my leveling since I have the time due to Cataclysm’s December 7th release AND because Nick is afraid that since I now have access to all sort of cool things I’m racing through the game and not “enjoying it,” I’m going to spend a couple of days devoted to increasing my professions.

*sigh*

Which leads me to this question: is there a good region to go to if I’m above 100 but not quite to 150 for herbalism/alchemy? Lemme know!

Hmm. You can try Ashenvale, Stonetalon Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Hillsbrad

The herbs you want to pick to get your herbalism up are Wild Steelbloom (115), Bruiseweed (100), Kingsblood (125). You can also look for Briarthorn but it may be green at around 100.

When you hover on the herb, if the text is gray it means you won’t get a skillpoint. If it is green you “might” get one, if it is yellow you will probably get one, and if it’s orange you are guaranteed to get one. If it’s red you can’t pick it yet, but if you click on it it will tell you the skill you need to have. The idea is to keep moving to a different zone until you see herbs that are mostly yellow and orange, although Stranglethorn has all kinds. Most of those herbs are Kingsblood, Liferoot, with some Wild Steelbloom.

I think the best place to grab some herbs would be Stonetalon. It might be a little slow but once you get to about 150, go hang out in Stranglethorn.

    It’s been a while since I’ve leveled herbalism =/

    Here’s a list of herbs here: http://www.wowhead.com/items=7.9#0-2+1
If you click on the ‘comments’ tab, usually someone has posted what skill it requires to pick the herb.

Since your alchemy still looks like it’s at 83, then go ahead and grab Earthroot and Peacebloom — you can get these in almost any starting area. Also go train, whenever you have nothing but yellow recipes and no orange ones, it means you probably have something new to learn. Most of the time there are new things every 5 levels, so if you can, get a bunch of herbs and go skill up by the actual alchemy trainer. That way you can train as you level =)

Also if you want some extra gold, go to the tailoring vendor in Stormwind in the Mage Area and buy the White Wedding Dress and Blue Overalls patterns. Stick them on the AH for about 5g each and they should sell eventually. Quick money for buying things =) Use the 48 hour option.

I came here in the first place today to ask you about your writing — I *think* it was you that covered a fashion show wasn’t it? How did you get started doing freelance work? None of the state parks around here need clerks so I am trying to find *something* to do until next August when I go back to A&M. (also, I think we play Arkansas sometime soon… go Aggies! =P) I can’t find any science editing jobs (I’m almost done with my BA in Geology/finished my minor in English..) so I am trying to find anything!

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

To find freelance work, I actually checked Craigslist. Obviously you need to proceed with caution from that site, but it’s a good jumping off point. Because I was concentrating on writing, I can give you all kinds of writing/media/entertainment sites, but I don’t know so much about science…have you maybe tried contacting a university’s press office or the dean of science or something to see if they need any help with science editing? OR maybe putting up fliers around a university campus to edit research papers or lab reports? Just a thought!

Also: Aggies are going down on Saturday.

        YW YW YW =)

I was actually digging on Craigslist earlier, but almost everything fell into the: full-time, requires a degree (I still have 1 class to go and I’m not currently enrolled at A&M, just a community college, have to wait until next August to be back at A&M), or it was about a subject I’m clueless on (Linux, Tax Laws, the fulltime position was about Legal work).

I did find a place called DemandMedia, I am going to apply and see what happens! I think they write the little articles for those cheesy sites like eHow, etc. Either way, all they require is for me to edit it and then submit it. Easy. Or, if I want, I can write articles on _____, literally anything. If it works I’ll let ya know. They say they pay about 3 bucks per edited article (short, 500 words tops). Even 20 bucks a day would make my life SO much easier! Money is money and right now I’m definitely lacking in it…if only my ingame bank account looked like my RL one… *wistful sigh*

Hmm. If Arkansas beats us I will put the Razorback logo at the top of all my blog posts on and after Saturday for a week. But, I have faith in my Ags! =P

    Yep, follow the directions above.

    (Also, great combo for professions!)

Ya know? I had a thought last night about leveling professions because I started a gnome. I am completely neglecting leveling fishing because it’s stupid and I can always do it later. I chose tailoring and herbalism as my profs. Herbalism because it’s easy to level (I just pick the herbs I come across when transversing the areas) and makes money, and tailoring because I’m a clothie. To level tailoring, I just use the cloth I get from mobs, buy some thread, make the stuff and sell it. I do this at the end of my day so I don’t waste any time. With cooking, I do the same thing. Keep all the meats and stuff that I get from the creatures I fight, then at the end of the day, I cook and sell. It’s surprising how quickly I manage to level that stuff. Oh well.

Oh…this just made me think…Bethany do you have Track Herbs on? It’s in your General Spellbook tab on the first or second page. Just checking! =D That way when you see the gold dot on your minimap you can just run over and pick it.

I use profession leveling guides, which you can easily find by just googling fx “herbalism guide wow”.
These guides will usually tell you where the best places to pick herbs are at your given level of herbalism, and show you how to level up fx alchemism the cheapest way.

I also find leveling professions tedious yet sometimes rewarding.

I actually love lvling professions. My main is 450 in LW, Skinning, Cooking, First Aid, and Fishing. And no, I haven’t had her for forever, I only started playing last December. And my alt is 450 Alchemy and Herbalist. Ok, the fishing one was a pain. Hell, they all were. But I loved the challenge. And the pride with every you can make when done is well worth it, plus then you have something you can contribute to your guild. It’s amazing how in a guild with 30 people, most with at least 2 alts, how few 450 LW’s there are. Or even how few people bother with professions. And for both the skinning and herb collecting I used his site: http://www.wow-professions.com/wowguides. very helpful.
I cannot wait for Archeology to come out! Oh, and don’t forget about your cooking, you need to be a certain lvl to be able to set out a Fish Feast, and if your like me, you won’t want to grind out the profession in two days. Best way is to lvl them as you lvl your toon imo. GL!

I have two Leatherworkers on 450 and pretty much bought all the leather needed. Allow some time to find cheap leather on the AH, no need to rush 1-450 in a day.
