NPC: The Most Confusing Abbreviation Ever

September 30, 2010

Okay. I have a confession to make.

Until today I have been UBER CONFUSED as to what the abbreviation NPC stands for in WoW.

And not just because I’m new to gaming–it’s because NPC is also a sorority thing.

It stands for National Panhellenic Conference, which is the “conference” that every nationally recognized sorority is a part of. Think of it this way–let’s say a single sorority chapter (also known as a “house”) is a very selective state that chooses who gets to live there. Then, NPC is the national government, with representatives from each state as a part of that council. NPC basically makes sure that all of the sororities are following the rules/regs/policies that the organizaton has established and all of the chapters have agreed to follow.

So yeah. Every single time someone has mentioned an “NPC,” my mind has immediately jumped to sorority life. And then I’m confused. However, today I decided to Google the abbreviation and figure out what it could stand for besides my version. The more you know, right?

But! Isn’t is kind of cool that there is a weird little intersection of WoW and sorority life other than me?…

Abbreviations are like codes in WoW. Learning them is part of becoming a WoW player – you learn the language.
Anyone unfamiliar with WoW abbreviations could look at a random trade chat section and understand only a minimum, fx “LFM HC ICC10 DBW reserved”. New abbreviations will come in Cataclysm as they emerge really fast. A good example is probably GS (gearscore) which became common knowledge quite quickly after the addon became “popular”.

I once went to the mostly Italian populated server Crushridge (EU) and could understand most of what they said only because they used the english founded abbreviations mixed with italian, I thought that was funny.

Instead of googling them, I use urbandictionary.com which basically is a catalogue for internet slang. I find that quite helpful, and recommend it to others 🙂

I’m a huge urban dictionary proponent, but had never thought of using it for the crazy WoW abbrevs. Thanks for that!
